How to Use a Wooden Wick Candle (Without the Struggle)

Wooden wicks are the best thing about a candle — that soft crackle, that slow even burn. They're also the #1 thing people message me about: "Mine won't stay lit!" "It keeps going out!" Nine times out of ten, it's not the candle. It's the technique. Wooden wicks play by slightly different rules than cotton ones.

The first burn matters even more

Light your wooden wick candle and let it burn until the wax melts all the way to the edge of the jar — usually 2–3 hours for our sizes. Wooden wicks need this full melt pool to establish a strong flame. Blow it out early and you'll fight tunneling forever.

Trim differently than cotton wicks

Forget the quarter-inch rule — wooden wicks want just 1/8 inch above the wax. Snap or trim off the charred black bits before every burn. If the wick is too tall, the flame gets lazy and drowns. Too short and it can't catch. 1/8 inch is the sweet spot.

How to light it right

Don't just hold a match to the top. Tilt the candle slightly and let the flame catch *across* the full width of the wick — you want the whole wooden strip lit, not just one corner. A long lighter or matches work best. Give it 30 seconds to establish before you decide it's "not working."

"It keeps going out!" — the fixes

The wick is drowning in wax. This is the most common issue. If melted wax is pooling over the wick, carefully pour off a little excess wax (into the trash, never the sink), trim the wick to 1/8 inch, and relight.

There's too much char buildup. That black crusty layer insulates the wood and kills the flame. Snap it off before every burn — it should come away easily.

The room is drafty. Wooden wick flames are more delicate than cotton. Move it away from vents, fans, and open windows.

You're relighting too soon. After blowing it out, let the wax cool and the wick dry for a few minutes before relighting. A soggy wick won't catch.

The crackle is the reward

Get the technique right and a wooden wick gives you something no cotton wick can: that gentle fireplace crackle, a slower burn, and a wider scent throw. Worth the tiny learning curve.
