Fried. Frazzled. Snapping when you brush it, frizzy no matter what you do. If that's your hair right now, take a breath — damaged hair isn't a life sentence. As a stylist, I bring hair back from the brink every single week, and the fix is almost never one miracle product. It's a routine.
Here's exactly how to help damaged hair, in the order that matters most.
First: what does damaged hair actually look like?
- Snaps or stretches like gum when wet
- Split ends that travel upward
- Frizz that no serum seems to touch
- Dull, rough texture even right after washing
- Tangles constantly, especially at the ends
If you're nodding along, keep reading. All of this is fixable — with one honest exception I'll get to below.
Step 1: Switch to a shampoo that rebuilds, not strips
Most drugstore shampoos are too harsh for compromised hair — they strip the little natural oil damaged hair has left. You want a shampoo with reparative ingredients that cleans gently while putting strength back in. Our Mane Squeeze shampoo was made for exactly this: it rebuilds strength from the inside out instead of just sudsing and leaving.
Step 2: Mask weekly, no excuses
This is the single highest-impact step. A weekly repair mask drives protein and moisture deep into the hair shaft where daily conditioner can't reach. Apply to damp hair, leave it 10–15 minutes (longer if your hair is really thirsty), rinse cool. Consistency beats intensity here — every week, not just when you remember.
Step 3: Seal your ends daily
Split ends can't be glued back together permanently (more on that in a second), but a good end seal smooths the frayed cuticle so ends look and feel whole while the rest of your routine does its work. A pea-sized amount on dry ends, every day. Our Split End Seal was made for this exact job.
Step 4: Turn down the heat
I know. But heat on damaged hair is like sunbathing on a sunburn. Drop your tools 25–50 degrees, always use a heat protectant, and give your hair at least 2–3 heat-free days a week. Your ends will thank you within a month.
Step 5: Stop over-washing
Every wash swells the hair shaft and lifts the cuticle. Damaged hair should be washed 2–3 times a week max. On off days, dry shampoo at the roots is your best friend — it buys you an extra day without a full wash cycle.
Step 6: Trim the truly dead ends
Here's the honest part: no product can fuse a split end back together. If ends are splitting upward, the kindest thing you can do is trim them. Cutting off half an inch of dead ends makes the other 90% of your hair look dramatically healthier overnight. (And yes — come see us. We'll only take what's actually dead.)
Step 7: Be gentle when it's wet
Wet hair stretches and snaps far more easily than dry hair. Detangle with a wide-tooth comb starting from the ends, never rip a brush through soaking hair, and swap your rough towel for a soft tee or microfiber wrap.
